In 1753, Parliament passed a law in England declaring that if a man and woman were to be wed, they must either both be 21 years of age or have the consent of their parents. What were disgruntled lovestruck adolescents to do, other than flee to Scotland where boys of 14 and girls of 12 could be joined in matrimony, whatever disapproving dad thinks of the match? Since then, the Blacksmiths Shop at Gretna Hall has gone down in legend as one of the most popular wedding venues for elopers, and can still be hired for ceremonies today.
